How to Sell Laser Cut Files on Etsy: A Seller's Guide
Want to sell laser cut files on Etsy? Learn the creator rules, current fees, file limits, what to put in the ZIP and the mistakes that lead to refunds.
Digital files have no shipping, no stock and no materials cost per sale, which is why so many makers want to sell laser cut files on Etsy. The catch is that Etsy has specific rules about who counts as the creator of a digital item, how files are delivered, and what each sale costs in fees. This guide explains how those rules work as of late 2026, how to package your files so buyers can actually cut them, and the mistakes that lead to refunds and bad reviews.
Important: Etsy changes its fees and policies from time to time. The numbers below were checked against Etsy's published pages when this article was written, but always read Etsy's current Fees and Payments Policy and its seller policies before you rely on them.
Can you sell laser cut files on Etsy?
Yes. Etsy allows digital items, and laser cut files sold as instant downloads are a common category. What matters is that the design is your own.
Etsy sorts listings by the seller's creative role. Digital downloads generally fall under what Etsy calls "designed by" the seller, which means you created the design. In practice:
Allowed: files you designed yourself, including designs where you used software tools as part of your own creative process.
Not allowed: reselling someone else's SVG or DXF files as they are, even if you bought them with a commercial licence. A licence to sell finished products made from a file is not the same as the right to resell the file itself, and in Etsy's view it does not make you the creator.
Disclosure: if generative tools played a part in creating a design, Etsy asks sellers to say so in the listing. Read Etsy's current creativity standards for the exact wording.
If you start a design with any generator or template service, read that service's terms to see what you are allowed to resell, and add enough of your own design work that the result is genuinely yours. Also avoid trademarks, characters, sports logos and brand names unless you hold the rights. Intellectual property complaints can lead to listings being removed or a shop being suspended.
What it costs: Etsy fees for digital files
These are the main fees at the time of writing. Check Etsy's fees page for current figures, because they change.
Listing fee: USD 0.20 per listing. A listing lasts four months and can auto-renew for another 0.20. Each sale also renews the listing and is charged again.
Transaction fee: 6.5% of the item price (plus shipping and gift wrapping, which digital items usually do not have).
Payment processing fee: a percentage plus a small fixed amount per order. The rate depends on the country where your bank account is based; in the US it has been around 3% plus USD 0.25.
Offsite Ads fee: charged only when a sale comes from an Etsy-paid ad on another website. It is 15% for most shops and 12% for shops with at least USD 10,000 in sales over the previous 365 days. Smaller shops can opt out; larger ones cannot. The fee is capped at USD 100 per order.
Set-up fee: some new sellers pay a one-time, non-refundable fee when opening a shop. Etsy shows it during sign-up if it applies.
VAT on digital items: in some countries, Etsy must collect and pay VAT on digital downloads. It adds this to the buyer's price and handles it for sales through Etsy Payments.
Fixed fees take a bigger share of cheap items. On a low-priced file, the 0.20 listing fee and the fixed part of processing can eat a noticeable slice, so work out your take-home amount before setting a price.
How Etsy delivers digital files
Etsy's digital listings have a few technical limits to plan around:
Up to five files per listing, each up to 20 MB.
Accepted file types include PDF, common image formats and ZIP. Laser files such as SVG, DXF and LightBurn files are best delivered inside a ZIP. Check Etsy's current list of accepted formats.
No variations. A digital listing cannot have a size or format dropdown. Either include every size in the download, or create a separate listing for each.
File names are limited in length and cannot be changed once uploaded, so name files clearly before uploading.
Instant download: buyers get the files right after payment. Once purchased, access can only be removed by cancelling the order.
What to put in the download
A buyer opens your ZIP and needs to cut a good part on the first try. Include:
SVG and DXF at minimum, since together they open in almost all laser software. Our comparison of SVG vs DXF for laser cutting explains why both are useful.
A LightBurn file and a 1:1 PDF if you can. Our overview of laser cut file formats covers what each one is for.
Clear layer colours. Red for cut, blue for engrave, green for score, and a note explaining them.
Material thickness and kerf. State the thickness the joints were designed for and the kerf you allowed. A box designed for 3 mm will not fit together in 4 mm sheet. If you build the base of a design with the laser cut file generator, its cutting guide lists the kerf it assumed, which you can copy into your notes.
A README with assembly steps, recommended materials and your licence terms: personal use only, or small-business use allowed, and what is not allowed.
A test piece such as a small joint sample, so buyers can check fit before cutting the whole project.
The Digital Creation laser cut tool produces this kind of package: SVG, DXF, LightBurn, EPS and 1:1 PDF files, with assembly, cutting and material guides. That makes it a handy way to see a complete file set, or to build the base box, tray or stand that you then customise into your own design.
Listing photos and descriptions
Photograph a real cut. Cut your own file, assemble it and photograph the finished item. This also proves the file works. Mockups alone can mislead buyers.
Show the file contents. An image listing the formats, sizes and material thickness reduces questions.
Say clearly that it is a digital file. Put "digital file, no physical item shipped" near the top of the description.
List compatible software and machines in plain words, for example LightBurn, xTool Creative Space, Glowforge and Inkscape.
Use the words buyers search for in the title and tags, such as "SVG laser cut file" plus the product type, but write for humans first.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Files not tested. Joints that do not fit lead to complaints. Cut every design yourself before listing it.
Wrong scale. Some programs import SVGs at a different size. Add a reference dimension to the README and a known-size square on a reference layer.
ZIP too large. Split sizes across separate ZIPs to stay under the per-file limit.
Unclear licence. Buyers who want to sell the products they cut need to know whether they can. Spell it out.
Copying popular designs. Close copies can draw IP complaints. Make your own.
Ignoring fees. Calculate fees before pricing, especially for cheap files.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a licence to sell laser cut files on Etsy?
You need the rights to the design. If you created it yourself, you own it. You cannot resell files designed by someone else, even with a commercial licence for physical products.
What file format should I sell on Etsy?
Put SVG, DXF and PDF files inside a ZIP. Adding a LightBurn file helps LightBurn users. Etsy accepts ZIP files, which keeps everything together.
How much does Etsy charge to sell a digital file?
At the time of writing, a USD 0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and a payment processing fee that varies by country, plus Offsite Ads fees on some sales. Check Etsy's fees page, because these change.
Can buyers get refunds on digital downloads?
Set a clear refund policy in your shop and read Etsy's current rules for digital items. Answering questions quickly and helping buyers with scaling or kerf issues prevents most disputes.
