Size Chart to Sewing Pattern: Graded Patterns From One Photo

Turn a product photo and its size chart into graded sewing patterns for every size: what to upload, how to check the numbers and which files you get.

If you sell clothing, run a small brand or want to copy the fit of a garment you love, you often have a product photo and a size chart but no pattern. Drafting a full set of graded patterns by hand takes a pattern maker days. Photo to pattern turns those two things into sewing patterns for every size on the chart, ready to print or send to your cutter.

This guide explains what to upload, how the numbers are checked, and what files you get.

Who this is for

  • Clothing sellers who buy or design a style and need patterns in S, M, L, XL and beyond.
  • Small brands and boutiques that want consistent sizing across a range without hiring a full-time pattern maker.
  • Home sewists who have a ready-made size chart from a shop and want to sew the same style.

If you want to understand the manual process first, read how to make a sewing pattern from a picture. This guide is about doing it with a size chart, so every size comes out at once.

What you need

  • A clear product photo. One garment, the whole piece in view, ideally on a plain background. A front view works best; a back view helps with slits and back necklines.
  • The size chart for that product, as a picture or typed in by hand. It should list measurements such as bust or chest, waist, hips, length and sleeve for each size.

How to turn a size chart into a sewing pattern

  1. Upload the photo and the chart. Open Create sewing pattern and choose your pictures.
  2. The design is read for you. The garment type and its parts (neckline, collar, sleeves, length and fit) are read from the photo, and each size's numbers are read from the chart.
  3. Check the numbers. Every value is shown in a table you can edit. Fix anything the chart got wrong, fill in missing measurements, and confirm whether the chart lists body or garment sizes.
  4. Preview the pattern. See the pieces before you download, and adjust the numbers if anything looks off.
  5. Download. Get one size, or a ZIP with every size.

What files you get

Each size comes with:

  • Tiled A4 and US Letter pages with an assembly map and a test square, for home printing.
  • An A0 sheet for a print shop or plotter.
  • A projector file for cutting straight from the projected image.
  • SVG and DXF files for Inkscape, Illustrator, CAD and cutting software.
  • Instructions with a cutting layout and sewing steps.

Why grading matters

Grading is how a pattern grows from one size to the next. Each body area grows by a different amount: the bust might grow 4 to 5 cm a size while the shoulder grows much less. When the sizes come from a real size chart, each one matches the numbers your customers already see. Our guide on how to grade sewing pattern sizes explains the rules if you want to check the result by hand.

Tips for the best result

  • Use a sharp photo. Blurry or very small pictures make details harder to read.
  • Make sure the size chart is complete. If it only lists bust and length, add the missing measurements yourself.
  • Check whether the chart shows body or garment measurements and enter them the same way.
  • Sew a sample in one size and in cheap fabric before you cut the whole range. See how to make a toile.

Sell patterns under your own brand

With Add your logo you can put your store logo, name and contact details on every page of every file. The details stay saved in your browser, so each new pattern is branded automatically. If you plan to sell the patterns themselves, read how to sell PDF sewing patterns online, and if you are building a clothing line, see starting a clothing brand with ready patterns.
